Where does the French baguette come from?

The baguette is nowadays an essential food in France. You certainly know the image of the Parisian carrying a glass of wine and a baguette! Historians believe that the baguette was born in Vienna before arriving in France during the 19th century. Hence the name “Viennese bakery”!

In the past, bread was sold in the form of a loaf. Over time, its shape became longer and it was called “elongated loaf”. This transformation facilitated not only the manufacture of bread, but also its transport.

Characteristics of the French baguette

There are several types of French baguettes. Among them, we can mention: the classic baguette, the traditional baguette, the ficelle, the half-baguette, the flute, the molded baguette, the sarmentine, the spiked baguette and the “special” baguette.

Lighter and bulkier than other types of bread, the French baguette is unique in the world.  It represents the French know-how.

Today, the baguette is present on all our tables and we consume an average of 30 million baguettes per day. The baguette will soon represent France in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
